The story begins the second summer with Land OSullivan returning to his home in view of the Tetons from us first semester teaching at the University of Wyoming. During the flight in the small plane he remembers his previous year learning the Butterfield way, the education he received, a wife he did not expect to have, and how he had left the east and the culture of Columbia University and New York City. He had left both in fact and in spirit, Butterfield had changed him from eastern man to rancher and mountain man with the sills and traditions of their pioneer and Indian heritage.

He was no longer a member of a crowd as he had been in the east he was his own man in the western sense. This summer would test him more than he thought. His wife Ellen meets him at the airport with a warm greeting tells him she had a surprise. Turning into where their home was to be built on the old homestead site by the waterfalls given them by Abe Butterfield, Land stood in shock. Twenty people were working at what amounted to an old fashioned barn raising.

The large log home was complete but for the detail of some of the roof, a few things inside and furniture. Almost every one he had met in the first summer was there, and the barn was done, fences were being made, and lunch was ready. When he saw his father Sean come to the porch tears could not be held. But this is Butterfield country, and in just three days he was settled and working the ranch.Land is now part of the Butterfield circle of family. He came over a year ago to learn, and it changed his life. Now he was also teaching in the Butterfield way where each member adds something to the conversation and the information that feeds it.

Information must come from original sources like those found in the Butterfield home collected for over a hundred years. Land had arrived as a student searching for something, a year and half and two summers later he is a married man with one on the way. He finds a depth of character runs generations deep in a west known as the Fly over States. He has also learned something else beyond the importance of tradition and common sense that guides everything in the Butterfield world. In the American heartland and tradition some things can not be sold, they must be given.
